Where Did It Come From?

This is what it means to be inspired.
But where does inspiration come from? Why would anything as simple as a song or picture speak so strongly to us that we would want to change?
After all, change goes against everything in our beings. We fight change with every weapon we have in our arsenal. We want things to stay the same because we want to know what to expect.
We don't want surprises...
We want to be right.
It's not safe or comfortable out in the unknown, and that's why we build walls in the first place. So why would anything make us want to move?
What (or who) could possibly inspire us leave our comfort-zone?
To me, the answer seems pretty obvious.
God could.
You know, I think we get the idea that God only speaks in shouts and crazy miracles. If we're not hearing a loud voice from heaven, we can't be hearing God.
But I think God speaks to each of us the way we need to hear it.
Maybe He speaks to you through music. Or art. Or movement. Or a book. Or a sermon. Or through scripture. Or the words of a friend. Or some other way entirely!
And maybe He's the one inspiring you to move. To leave the confines of your comfort-zone.
Because He has plans for you that don't involve staying where you are. In fact, I think Mr. Beaver said it best...
"Safe? Who said anything about being safe? 'Course He isn't safe. But He's good."
...

Absolutely! So many times. But my favorites are when it's a whole lot of little things (a sermon, a devotional, a verse, a conversation, a picture on the internet, an email newsletter, etc.) from COMPLETELY different, random places that have absolutely no connection, and they all collide at once on the SAME topic. That's when I finally say, "Okay, God. I get it. Thanks for not giving up on my hard-headed self."
ReplyDeleteThose God-incidences are definitely one of the most obvious ways that God talks to me. I also love praying, "Lord, show me what I need to learn today in Your Word." Then I just close my eyes and see what book comes to mind, turn there, and start reading. It's not always right on target every time, but usually it speaks to something I've been working through recently.
Yep! It shows up once, and you shrug it off. Twice, and that's pretty cool. Three, four, FIVE times! "Aaaahhhhhh. I see what You did there, God!"
